Brahma Kamal

Brahma Kamal, the state flower of Uttarakhand, is a native plant of the Himalayan region. The plant is found at elevations ranging from 3000 -4800 meters. It is a hermaphrodite herb that growss to a height of about 5 to 10 cm. The flower blossoms among the rocks and grasses of the hillside during the mid-monsoon season (July to August).

Purple flower heads are concealed from view by layers of thin yellowish-green petals that give protection from the chilly mountain environment. The blossoms are visible until mid-October. The flower is believed to have the power to fulfill desire and grant blessings to those who offer it to the deity. It is also considered a symbol of purity, enlightenment and spiritual attainment

The plant is extremely precious in the region. It is considered a spiritual flower and iss offered Lord Vishnu at the Badrinath shrine and Lord Shiva at the Kedarnaath shrine. Brahma Kamal is offered at temples and distribbuted as ‘prasada’ during the Nanda Ashtami festival held in September/October.
